Ministry to Tertiary Students
At City Uniting Church we are especially welcoming to students who are here at ANU or the University of Canberra. We ask you to please consider making our church your own by being a part of our church family.
We have a number of students in our congregation, many of them from overseas, here in Canberra on a one or two year scholarship. We have welcomed students have joined us from Lesotho, Kenya, Swaziland, Tanzania, Singapore, China, Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Taiwan, Botswana and Japan.
Our students are not just visitors but join in our service leading prayer, reading the Bible, acting as stewards for the collection and on the roster for morning tea.
An important church committee is the Student Ministry Support Group (SMSG) chaired by Stella Naimet. This group promotes hospitality by arranging a BBQ for the New Year and planning trips for the students. Some members in our church have volunteered to check over assignments for students for whom English is not their first language. The contact person for that is Jenny Rowland.
Dennis Martin (an Elder and Lay Preacher) conducts a Bible Study every fortnight. This is always on a Tuesday, from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Light refreshments are provided. In addition he is available at the ANU chaplaincy office on Monday and Friday afternoons, 1 to 4pm. Students are welcome to pop in to discuss any problems or help needed, to pray or just to chat.
There is a student group called “Christian Students Uniting (CSU) – ACT” which operates out of ANU. The current President is Pesta Sibarani. CSU liase with our City Uniting Church, we help them to promote a Christian ethos of keeping faith, doing justice and building community.
Please call us, we would love you to be part of our church family.
